Passages in Space and Time

This interactive, animated drawing is generated by the movement of wind, time and people. For this installation at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts in Boone, NC, weather instruments were placed on the roof of a nearby building to measure wind speed and direction and transmit the data to a computer in the gallery. A camera suspended from the ceiling above the projection tracked movement of people.

In the drawing, groups of colored shapes are pushed by the wind across circles whose colors keyed to the minute of the hour. When people enter the space in front of the projection, new shapes are added to the drawing tracking their movement. When shapes drawn by people’s movements collide with ones made by the wind, a burst of color appears.
